"Sophs" - Not just a name, so much more

Why is October 3rd, 2010, 1:45 am important?

A little girl name Sophia Cassandra Gaffud Jaucian announced that she could not wait any longer and wanted to see all of us. She is Joy's and my niece, who was born on October 4, 2010 at the hands of Dr. Hesh Green, a wonderful doctor, tennis captain, and friend at Mount Carmel East in Columbus, OH. As her features changed from that day forward, she went from a tiny life to "Sophs". This was especially true for me in the last few days before she made her journey back to the Philippines with her mother Carole, and her loving grandparents Fe and Jaime. I wanted to write something for her when I heard this beautiful song by Brian McKnight (see link below - I want to thank him for the inspiration). I first wanted to steal just the punch line but then I stole the whole song (well actually I stole the structure/meter) and wrote my own lyric. Since Geoff, Sophs's Dad, wasn't with us for her birth, I attempted to write the lyric from a Dad's and an Uncle's perspective - actually, her grandparents, especially her grandmother Fe, feels the same way. Hopefully, Geoff can do a cover! Wouldn't that be great?

Is life couched in irony?

Discussion:

I have a simple thesis. Any goal that you set in your life can only achieved by working the underlying irony. Miss the irony and you'll miss the chance to fulfill your goal. Instead of talking in circles, how about I give you some examples? :)

(a) Want to be a good leader? Commit yourself to serving others. More people are conferred the honor of leadership when people notice their life of service. John Paul II? Gandhi? Mother Teresa?

(b) Want to be loved? Love others. Jesus asked Simon, "Do you love me?" Simon said, "Yes Lord, I love you". Jesus said, "If indeed you do, then love others".

(c) Want your shots in tennis to have more direction and depth? Stop watching where the ball goes at it leaves your racket and start keeping your head steady and focused on the hit point. Nadal, anyone? The more distress you find yourself in (caused by your opponent), the more you need to focus on controlling things on your side of the court.

(d) Want kids to care about you? Commit yourself to caring about them and forget about how and whether they respond. I mean, really caring about them - work on being completely selfless, completely involved and completely loving. I was teaching my 7-year Godchild how to keep score in tennis; I could literally hear the gears turning in her brain as she tried to wrestle with 15-0, 30-0, 40-0, 40-15, 40-30, Deuce, 40-Ad, Game. I had absolutely no expectation that she would get it - all I expected was for us to work at it. And then, miracle. :)

(e) Have you ever read or heard about the prayer of St. Francis of Assisi? Note the following verses and then contemplate the sense of irony put that has been put forward.

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

I could go on and on but you get the point...go forth and meet life and its ironies. And by the way, never forget the ultimate irony. When we say that we are alive, isn't it true that we are really dying, every second of the day? So, if you ever wonder what to do with your "life", I'll tell you to just give it away (to whoever needs it). My grandfather, "Bhau", meaning "brother", gave his life away. Long after he passed, people remember the smallest of favors he did them without asking for anything in return. Bhau understood it. He got it. Bhau knew that he was given an opportunity to make others' lives better and he committed himself to that cause and in doing so, he enriched himself. Bhau lived and loved life's irony. That is the lesson he taught me and which is the basis of this blog.

Tennis - Pleasure and Frustration Rolled Into One

Folks:
I have a friend on my tennis team (let's call him MR) who loves to vent his frustration and pleasure - he wears emotion on his sleeve. Before any of you cast stones or crook your nose, let me tell you that he is not alone. I have been known to let out a yelp or two. Also, going back to my tennis days in Johnstown, PA, my other friend RN could also bring the house down w/ his booming cry. At the 4.0-4.5 level that we all play at, mistakes come easily while winners are few and far between. I wrote a little ditty to commemorate the few moments that I can remember that led to MR (or for argument sake any of us) venting. Every so often, even at our level, a day of frustration does end on a high note. Enjoy!

I had written this a year ago:

I hope you are taking (have taken) a moment to grieve and offer prayers on the solemnest of occasions. He breathed His last at 3:00 pm. The end of one life in 33 AD created the possibility of eternal life for all – isn’t that the ultimate irony? The message of death and resurrection is one of despair conquered by hope. I wish you and your loved ones a Happy Easter.

I don't think I feel differently but I must write something different so here goes:
I hope you are taking (have taken) a moment to use this occasion to remember the solemnest of occasions. He breathed His last at 3:00 pm. The end of one life in 33 AD created the possibility of eternal life for all – isn’t that the ultimate irony? The message of death and resurrection is one of despair conquered by hope. Use this message of hope to create or renew your connection with God (Christ) today. If you call for Him, He will drop everything and run to your aid. Ask him to light up your insides so that your outsides will start glowing. Next time you are driving home alone, look at the passenger seat and imagine Him riding with you. Talk to Him. Hold in your right palm the rosary that hangs from your rear-view window and thank him - not once but once every second. Thank him for all your triumphs and for all your failures - it is in your failures that you can feel closest to Him. Ironically, success often leads us away from Him because we feel that we know the answers. But answers only beget more questions and failure to answer questions beget failures. So, why not rejoice in our failures and invite his presence into our lives. Happy Easter!

Welcome My Friend To The Machine

Question:
What happens when a long held dream is close to being fulfilled?

Discussion:
A couple of years ago, I was part of a proposal team at work. We had applied for funding to build a next generation machine related to ultrasonics - it was our collective dream to say the least. For the uninitiated, ultrasonics is the theory of high frequency sound waves (you can actually use them to join/bond materials). After the proposal got awarded, I had had no role to play since I handed the project over to a colleague. Fast forward to today - my colleague announces that the final concrete pour was taking place to build the machine foundation. That announcement was inspiration enough for these words. I hope you enjoy them and get the references! Some italicized references are internal to the company and general readers will not get them (sorry).

Every machine was dreamed

By an engineer on an idle stretch

Even Rome was built in a day

Sometimes twice in artist’s sketch

Robin questions intelligent human design

Waste processing next to reproduction?

Question: I've tried resolutions - I'm done with them. How do I get healthy, in a real way?

Pump it, sweat it

Every rep, count it

Uh, Ah, Uh, Ah

No, I cannot make it

Come on now, work it

Feel it, live it

Every set, count it

Why did I come today?

Why didn't I stay away?

Surely I cannot make it

Step on it, work it

And so it goes...on and on, over and over. The verses sound like they came out of a fitness video or fitness tape. How many of us have seen infomercials where supremely fit athletes promote products that promise to tone the body? Most products are supposed to be easy-to-use, guarantee results in a few days, easy to stow away, and allow you to keep your current diet. One word: Bologna. :) The ingredient that is never discussed in these fitness recipes is "human willingness" or "mental fortitude". You cannot buy it at GNC no matter how much you are willing to spend.

For a moment, let us set aside the 15-20% people among us who have tremendous mental fortitude - they can will themselves to exercise and eat right (or do anything for that matter) no matter what circumstances they find themselves in. My roommate from my undergraduate school was such a guy - he would focus on his notes prior to tests as though someone was going to take them away from him. Rain, shine, hunger, dorm noise or pesky roommates notwithstanding, George's concentration would rarely waiver. It is no surprise that he topped his class in Electrical Engineering. For the rest of us, matter triumphs over mind most of the time. We run 4 miles and feel so great that we eat a huge dinner and polish it off with dessert. We lift for 1.5 hours on one day and feel that it is a license to go drinking with our buddies. A bowl of cereal in the morning with some fruits is like having permission to say, "supersize it". In other words, we end up immediately negating any gain from exercising. I have been caught in this dilemma for most of my adult years and have wondered if there was a way out.

There is a way out! It is called K E V I N, which is an acronym! Here is how it goes.

K(alm):

It starts with deep introspection during which one uncovers and faces one's goals - during this step, don't go for the low-hanging fruit. Deep introspection is about hearing your inner voice. For this you'll need to calm yourself down, switch off all stimuli like TVs/IPODs, and just listen to your mind. This step is about uncovering the most deep seated concerns or insecurities that you have related to your physical self. "I feel that my thighs are too big," "Why can't I exercise more restrain during eating", "I really would like to do away with my persistent back pain," and "I'm not sure why people stare at my love handles" are all acceptable responses. :) In fact, the more explicit the list of goals, the better. I started by asking you to focus on your physical self but you will soon realize that some of your goals won't have anything to do with your body. For example, you may come up with, "I don't want to feel nervous" or "I cannot get myself to go and workout" or "I would like to get along with my parents-in-law".

E(mpathy):

If you interview a teacher, he/she will tell you that I can teach only if the student wants to learn. There are so many analogies that express this thought (including taking the horse to the water but being unable to make it drink). Teachers will also tell you that most things in life do not come without work and perseverance.

I introduced this blog by talking about human willingness (the want) and mental fortitude (the stay-with-it-ness). The first step, "Kalm," will result in a list of your goals. You will be tempted to go after the quick-fix (the diet pill, the thigh gizmo available for $19.95, the end-all-and-be-all diet, etc.) for the bigger goals. If you are ever besieged by the urge to invest in any of these quick-fixes, remember your teachers' words. Treat your goals with empathy (understand them). Ask yourself, "How about I go after just the top three this year?" Let me give you a hint - most of your goals can be classified into three categories. (a) Sound body, (b) Sound Mind, [and (c) A Deeper Connection to Others & A Higher Power]. Willingness and fortitude take work/energy- if you pursue too many goals, you will spread your energy too thin. Also, it is a self-propelling process - the more willingness/fortitude you commit to an activity, the more chances of success of that activity, and the more chances of your mind developing willingness/fortitude for other activities. Empathy will allow you to treat yourself with compassion and that will permit you to pick a few goals to go after.

V(isualization):

Dr. Wayne Dyer says that "if you change the way you see the world, the world you see changes." In this step, you have to decide if you want to see the world as kind or evil. Why? A kind world comes to your aid in achieving your goals, while an evil world runs away from you or at worst, acts to your detriment. Thoughts like "I will definitely fail in goal one" and "Circumstances will conspire to prevent me for reaching any of my goals" belong to an evil world while those like, "I can see myself achieving my first goal," or "I have found the perfect teacher who is going to guide and coach me to accomplishment" belong to a kind world.

You must be able to see your goals as a part of the kind world - otherwise, they will not be fulfilled. The mental fortitude and willingness that we covered earlier belong to the kind world; despair, panic, and frustration belong to the evil world. Believing in a kind world is not some kind of hocus-pocus - it is a mental exercise and one that needs lots of practice. Positive begets positive; negative begets negative. Visualize yourself being connected to an infinite Source, which does not know failure or despair, and panic or frustration; as a consequence of that connection to Source (ref. Dr. Wayne Dyer) visualize you fulfilling your goals. The best example I can give you is watching the best tennis players play and then imagining you making the shots that they make; the imagining helps the mind to figure out the signals that it needs to send your muscles to emulate what you saw. In essence, the Source provides the fuel necessary for your engine to propel you towards your goals. And this is an iterative process; you work on your visualization and then work on your goals and so on (see section below on Nurture on how to work on your goals). If you cannot visualize yourself fulfilling your goals, then they are too lofty, and you need to go back to the Kalm and Empathy steps. Remember, no quick fixes. Alphabets before nouns, nouns before verbs, verbs before phrases, phrases before sentences, and sentences before paragraphs!

I(nvitation):

As you get better at your Visualization step, move to the Invitation step. In this you literally invite (of course, in your mind's eye) the kind world to send your way the tools that you need to fulfill your goals. Remember that in the first three steps, we focused on preparing you mentally to accept the challenge of achieving your goals. Now, it is time to locate the necessary "environment". Since positive begets positive and you are now radiating positive energy through Kalm, Empathy and Visualization steps, the kind world will respond by "sending" you the environment in which your goals can be fulfilled. This takes faith (and patience) but works every time - believe me. This is tantamount to people saying, "All the while I was searching for the answer when it was right in front of me". By changing the way you saw the world, you change the world you see. The world will send you ALL the resources that you will need.

N(urture):

This is the step when you go to work. With your goals selected with empathy and visualized as already being complete, you begin putting in the hard work in the environment that the kind world has provided. More often than not, the world also sends along a Teacher, which is the ultimate gift/blessing. A Teacher is an Energy which is at a higher level of achievement than you are. The harder you work in this stage, the more of a nurturing hand you will find with the Teacher.

Get your KEVIN On! If you ever look back, which you won't, look only to K(alm) and re-establish new goals! Good luck. May all your goals be fulfilled.

Service - A Road to Leadership?

How does one become a leader?

Discussion:
In US corporations and now increasingly in other parts of the world, a People Manager's job (one who has direct reports) is multifaceted. The Manager is expected to be resourceful, exhibit leadership qualities, be a fair judge of performance, and track and recommend pay scales/salary increases and at times, bonus distributions. Here we will discuss how a Manager may fulfill the expectation of exhibiting leadership qualities. The following questions often arise, (a) What does it mean to be a Leader? and (b) How does one become a Leader?.

In my experience, a wicked irony governs the ascension to leadership. Let me explain. The title (and thus responsibilities) of a Manager is given by the corporation but the recognition only comes after "respect" is conferred by the direct-reports. It is similar to the difference between a house, which is built by a construction company and a home, which is made by the family that resides in the house. "Respect" of direct-reports is an indication of the trust in the Manager - the effectiveness of the Manager, and subsequently in the role of a Leader, depends heavily on the trust he/she enjoys. Direct reports are very stingy with trust because good acts of the Manager can often be looked at from the lens of "why is he/she being nice to me?" and bad acts; well, need we go into that? Hence, earning trust is directly related to genuine (read: selfless) good acts. Genuine selfless good acts can be considered as a (colloquial) definition of service. So, in a long winded way, ascension to a Leader has its roots in service - there in lies the irony!

The more time a Manager spends in genuinely looking after the interests of his/her direct-reports in a selfless manner, the better his/her chances will be of becoming an effective Leader. The funniest thing is, the better the service is, the better are the chances of one of the direct-reports to get promoted to his/her position (which should be be selfless objective of service anyway, right?). Consequently, the better the Manager's chances of getting promoted.

In conclusion, nobody is given the baton of Leadership; it has to be painstakingly earned by looking after direct-reports day after day while not worrying about the fruits those acts may yield. Isn't this KARMA described in the Bhagwad Gita? There are so many examples of this in action - Mahatma Gandhi & Mother Teresa immediately come to mind. The greatest one is, of course, Jesus Christ, who died on the crucifix, serving his followers till his last breadth.

Michael Jackson - The King is Dead, Long Love the King

My reaction was, "the king is dead" and then my heart grew heavy and my mind numb. There are lines from so many of his songs that have made an indelible impression on me. "Don't tell me you agree with me, when I saw you kicking dirt in my eye" from Black or White is a beauty (there is a Hindi equivalent to it). When the video of Black or White finishes and we see faces morph into each other against the background of "Its black, its white, Its tough for you, yea yea yea...", it creates in our minds a possibility of a colorblind society - one with perfect integration. It will be certainly considered heartless of me when I say that Michael Jackson started his life as a "normal" black kid but didn't end it that way. He "morphed" his appearance over the years, like the ending of his song, perhaps to hide a skin condition, perhaps to live closer to his vision of a colorblind society, or perhaps for more bizarre reasons. In any case, the song ending became his life. God gave him so much - sense of rhythm, musical talent, ability to dance, and above all the courage to collaborate with the likes of Quincy Jones and Paul McCartney. With one song, Beat It, I remember a generation (in India) begin to identify with him.

"I'm starting with the man in the mirror, I'm asking him to change his ways, and No message could have been any clearer, If you wanna make the world a better place, take a look at yourself and make a change" is another classic verse - in this verse, Michael is almost Gandhian [like Mahatma Gandhi], who asked us to "be the change you'd like to see in th world". The choir singing the words "man in the mirror" at the end of the song and Michael improvising is a surreal experience; on that you can live over and over again on your favorite home theater system. Alas, the soul of that song has passed on to another dimension. Away from sycophants, flatterers, yes-men (or yes-women), and so-called advisers, I hope Michael finds the peace that eluded him here. A peace so everlasting that he would not be compelled to sing, "For you are not alone, For I am here with you, Though we're far apart, You're always in my heart"; rather, we'd be compelled to sing that song in his remembrance.

This begins my foray into the 21st century. For the longest time, I have heard about blogging - now I join the fray. In Hindu tradition, I begin by praying to Lord Ganesh. This year, Ganesh Chaturthi fell on September 3rd, 2008. In spite of wanting to pray and set aside a few hours in the evening for pooja and prasad, this week got busy. However, it was nice that my sister-in-law Carole joined us from the Philippines.

Let me start by praying to Ganesh for peace and health for everyone. The famous Dagadushet Halwai Mandir from my birthplace, Pune, Maharashtra, India is given above. Here is a short poem illustrating a dialog between me and Lord Ganesh.
